In an effort to improve the safety of electrical equipment in Malaysia’s growing market, the Energy Commission (EC), Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST), has added three (3) new categories, and some types of equipment under the existing category required to obtain the Certificate of Approval per Rule 97(1) of the Electricity Regulations 1994. Based on this Regulation, it is the manufacturer and importer’s responsibility to obtain the Certificate of Approval from the EC before regulated electrical equipment are sold in the Malaysian market. The three new categories are Massager, Air Conditioner (up to 4hp) and Adaptor/Charger. As of July 1, 2013, it is mandatory to obtain the Certificate of Approval for these new categories. However, market surveillance becomes effective January 1, 2014.
